Education in Guyana vs. Education in Burundi
Education System:
public and private Nursery/preschool education: ages 5 and 7 months - 16 The objective is to teach basic numeracy and literacy skills and some knowledge of society and science. Secondary education: There are different levels of secondary education. Junior secondary schools act as a bridge to high school (senior secondary school) or vocational education. At the end of this students can take the exam for the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Senior secondary schools aim to produce qualified students who can take the CSEC after grade 11 or take the Caribbean Advanced Proficient Exam (CAPE) which will get them into a tertiary school. Vocational education: This is considered a technical school. Tertiary education: This is made up of advanced technical schools and universities. Guyana has it's own university located in two different areas that provides bachelor and master degrees and also a medical school Enrollment: Primary: 88.1% Secondary: 61.2% Spending: The government provides the funds for education but it isn't nearly enough. They spend about 4.2% of their total budget on education. With this under spending it is very hard to keep qualified teachers around and there is a lack of learning materials and facilities. This makes the educational system in Guyana among the weakest of the Caribbean. Background: In the 1980's political and economic conditions worsened resulting in many teachers leaving the country to find better pay and better job security. In the 1990's budgets towards education began to increase which meant salaries increased. In 2000 the salary reached $100 a month. Literacy Rates: Male: 99.1% Female: 98.5% |

Training of kindergarten and primary schools teachers Primary school teachers are trained for two years. And have finished the lower secondary education. B. Training of secondary school teachers Secondary school teachers are trained at the University of Burundi from which they graduate after four years in various specialties. Some teachers specifically trained for secondary education, are also trained for three to five years. c. Higher education: Higher education: is mainly provided by the Université du Burundi.
